Planning a private adventure to Japan
In many ways Japan is just “another” country but visiting Japan, especially for the first time is not like visiting Paris or London! On one hand Japan can seem similar to north America but it is a different culture, and in many ways different than what you may experience in other places. This is the charm of Japan! Japan is a combination of the east and west, tradition and innovation, nature and cities. A culture where the group comes before the individual. Despite Japan’s influence on world culture and the global economy, it is still seen as mysterious for many from the west.
Japanese uniqueness
Japan is an Asian country, but very different from other Asian countries, incredibly modern and very western, a country of contrasts. When first arriving in Japan, the first sight a tourist sees is progress everywhere, modern buildings, incredible transportation (Bullet Train!) and along with this in a large shopping center we find a traditional restaurant where one eats on mats seated on the floor on low tables. Next to the Bullet Train is an ancient temple, rock concerts (many western bands), contemporary theatre, first rate symphony, and of course all next to the traditional Japanese tea ceremony and beautiful temples.
A country of contrasts
Japan is also the country of the cherry blossoms, active volcanoes, and spectacular nature. Ancient castles overlooking cities to “punk” at its peak in the Harajuku district and a country that is always striving to be the “best” in the world.
For many years Japan was seen as a mysterious destination, cut off from the rest of the world, which only made it more attractive as a destination. In recent years this has changed, a major turning point was the Football (soccer) World Cup, which was held in Japan in 2002, much of the signage was translated into English, making it easier for visitors to find their way around. In recent years this trend has continued with the realization that tourism has huge economic potential.
Why am I telling you this?
You have decided you are planning a private trip (not a large organized group) – Great!
We cannot emphasize enough how important proper planning is a factor in a successful experience, reserving hotel rooms, purchasing tickets for all kinds of popular destinations.
When is the best time to have a Japan adventure?
Of course, travel to Japan is possible year-round but the more popular seasons are spring and fall, since many festivals take place during these times.
From mid-September to late November, the fall, there is a decrease in the humidity and the possibility of typhoons, but it still can be rainy, however with the changing colors of the leaves it can be spectacular, and, in the fall, Japan is strikingly beautiful.
Spring, from around April to May is cherry blossom season, it can be very pleasant, and the cherry blossoms are beautiful and a huge part of Japanese culture. It can still be rainy.
Summer in Japan from June to August is hot and humid and very rainy.
Winter November to March can be chilly, and rainy and snowy in the mountains. There are also ice festivals as well
Keep in mind that it can be rainy for much of the year.
Japan can be extremely crowded, especially in the large cities and major tourist destinations: Tokyo, Kyoto, Takayama, and theme parks like Disney. March-April and October-November it is crucial hotel rooms and entrances be reserved.
Japan is huge and there is so much to see! Most first-time visitors to Japan come for 2-3 weeks. Obviously, it is not possible to visit everything in such a short amount of time, so we generally focus on the island of Honshu and organize our time to touch on as much as possible without visitors being overwhelmed. We usually recommend combining fascinating cities (Osaka, Kyoto, Tokyo) important historical sites (Hiroshima) nature (Japanese Alps), meeting locals, ancient towns, experiencing the unbelievably diverse Japanese cuisine, perhaps and interesting cultural experience (Japanese tea ceremony) and more according to your interests.
Japanese public transportation is incredibly reliable. In fact, if a train is 30 seconds late there are often announcements apologizing for the delay!
